Lecture: The History of Vinyasa Yoga

Description:

Vinyasa Yoga arrived in America in 1974, when a group of Americans taught the Ashtanga System of K. Pattabhi Jois in Encinatas, California.  The next year, Jois himself came West and the Vinyasa revolution had begun.  It’s roots go back to the mantras of the Vedas of 1200 BCE and later BCE stories of the hero Rama who was taught the Sun Salutation by his preceptor.  The latest evidence reveals a  vinyasa practice geared to the Chakras from the 6th century.

The history of Vinyasa is longer than you think.  Learn about it all in this image-rich conversation.

$45 p/session advance, $55 after June 22.  For registration, please link here.

New Views of Yogic Movement — Choreography in Vinyasa

Description:

People have been creating yoga poses for centuries, but most of us do not think of yoga as a creative act.

This workshop teaches the principles behind pose and vinyasa creation.

 Practically, we’ll do three things:

1) Explain yoga’s effects on the mind and body, detailing specifically how vinyasa and correct poses achieve this,

2) Give tools for discovering new bodily shapes that are “yogic” and,

3) Learn to choreograph vinyasas through a deep understanding of transitions and overall movement patterning (called Kalayata in Sanskrit).  We will create poses and link them to bring self-awareness, strength and poise.

This workshop serves the needsof personal yoga practice for students and sequencing for yoga teachers.

$45 p/session advance, $55 after June 22.  For registration, please link here.
