Ferocity, Faith and Finesse: The Life of Yoga Master B.K.S. Iyengar
The physical yoga practiced today is a science of attention and bodily poise largely created by the recently deceased B. K. S. Iyengar. He took one piece old yoga—asana (posture)–and explored it’s vast possibilities for evolution and wellness.
How did a man who never finished high school do it? What sacrifices did he make? How did he live? This is the story of the colorful life and choices of Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar.
Vinyasa Yoga’s Roots: Secrets of the Sun Salutation
Everyone knows the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar), yet it contains mysteries. Who made it and why? Why is it important to salute the sun?
This practice is ancient. Each pose has a distinct chant. We will learn these —as well as the story and purpose behind Surya Namaskar’s invention 3000 years ago. We will also learn how the sun salutation became so important within modern yoga.
Expect to work hard with both body and brain in this training as we explore the richness of this well-loved vinyasa form.
Learning Philosophy and Practice with the Hatha Yoga Pradipika
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is the main text of the original practice of physical yoga.
Written 600 years ago, it gives vibrant guidance on how to do yoga poses and pranayamas for physical health, mental clarity, and transcendence of this mortal plane.
We’ll read the book and explain its context and deeper meanings while applying its advice to our practice of breathwork and poses.
If you have a copy of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, bring it!
Meditation in Movement: The Promise of Vinyasa Yoga
To learn Meditation in Movement, we manage our body’s velocity, momentum and center of gravity. We see the shapes the body makes when it moves, as if it were drawing lines through the air, and we learn what to do with these images and forces in the mind.
Meditation is the key to coping with the challenges of life—or transcending them spiritually. In this workshop, you add this useful skill to your practice.
Where Do Yoga Poses Come From? The 5000-year story Yoga Posture
There is a debate about which yoga postures are new or old.
Is there evidence in archeology? In ancient texts? In Indian dance or martial arts?
Aesthetics, wellness and spiritual transformation inform the making of poses. Some postures use ancient principles, some don’t. What’s “authentic” here, and what’s off the mark?
Come see amazing imagery of posture from 5000 years ago. Discover the surprising evolution of asana and the yoga of the body.
