THE LECTURE:

At Last! Make sense of the Yoga Tradition through one Simple Story: The Life of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya!

Yoga’s song is so funked out with fab rhythms and rambling riffs, it’s hard to know its tune. It’s hard to “get” all its styles and stories and gods and people.

Wise yogis read through blogs and putter after the newest books, but, really, if some wiseacre could just make it clear in a quick hour, that would work.

So here’s the plan: sit down in a dark room under a big screen with a friendly know-it-all (Eric Shaw), see his lovely old pics, and get this whole yoga shebang pretty much settled into one small shopping bag to walk out the door with.

That’s this lecture.

We’ll hang out with deep research, see hip images, and get a bead on Big Yoga through the life of its most impactful modern teacher, the guru of Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois: Sri Tirumali Krishnamacharya!

The Movie:
Breath of the Gods

Krishnamacharya’s life and teachings are seen through the eyes of the director Jan Schmidt-Garre on his search for authentic yoga. His journey leads him from the legendary students and relatives of Krishnamacharya’s to the source of modern yoga, at the palace of the Maharaja of Mysore. From Pattabhi Jois Jan learns the “Sun salutation”, from Iyengar the “King of Asanas”, the headstand, and finally Sribhashyam reveals to him his father’s secret “Life Saving Yoga Session”.

A feature-length documentary including rare historical footage as well as lavish reenactments.
