- You will learn spiral patterns that employ a greater range of the body’s muscles, teaching small muscle groups how to work with large ones.
- You will learn greater motion control on the way to achieving smooth movement (called mandadhara).
- We will explore group movement patterns
- We will learn how alignment-in-movement relates to yoga’s aims of maintaining meditative focus and refining attention.
Sometimes called Shiva Nata (the dance of Shiva), this approach incorporates chants, meditations and mudras. In these sessions, they will be tied to the symbolism of Ganesh.
Session 1: Lecture & Images
Saturday Evening, 7/19, 7-9pm
Karma, Sex and Shiva: The Philosophical Structure of Tantra
As we clamber through Tantra’s jangle of holy books, karma, sex and Shiva rear up again and again, shaping a probing question: what are we going to do with the gift of life in this brief spell on Earth? Exploit it for pleasure (kama), or wisdom (jnana), or both?
This riddle drives the mad creativity of India’s self-transformation practices, and it shapes Tantra and yoga in particularly dramatic ways.
In this image-driven lecture, you will learn where yoga’s wild wisdom is rooted. You will meet both the modern and ancient soul of the tradition of Tantra.
Session 4: Lecture & Images
Sunday, 5:30 – 8:30pm, 7/20
Getting Fresh with Ganesh: Everything you Always Wanted to Know about the Elephant-Headed God
Ganesh: Fat, elephantine, garlanded with jewels: is he your mama?
He sure acts the part: removing your obstacles, granting boons, inspiring muses.
Where did this dude come from?
Ganesh is the tubby, elephant-headed son of Shiva, master of money, King of Fate. He’s loveable and awful and finds himself being stacked on your mantlepiece because he’s so cuddly, likeable and weird.
In this talk we tell his myth: how he came to be associated with obstacles, ganas (spirits), art, and rupees—and the low, low chakra: muladhara.
Parvati’s son, made from dirt and honored everywhere.
Come learn the history of Ganesh.
