Lecture: The History of Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa yoga (moving yoga) came to America in 1974, when a group of Americans taught “Ashtanga Yoga” in California. The next year, Ashtanga’s founder, K. Pattabhi Jois came West and the vinyasa revolution began. Its roots go back to the mantras of the scriptural Vedas of 1200 BCE, and the hero Rama was taught the Sun Salutation by his guru in the epic poem, the Ramayana. New evidence reveals vinyasa practices geared to the subtle body chakras from the 6th century. This history is longer and richer than you think. Learn all about it in this image-rich presentation.

Breakthroughs in Yogic Movement: Choreography in Vinyasa
People have been creating yoga poses for centuries, but most of us do not think of yoga as a creative act.
This workshop teaches the principles behind pose and vinyasa creation.
Practically, we’ll do three things:
1) Explain yoga’s effects on the mind and body, detailing specifically how vinyasa and correct poses achieve this,
2) Give tools for discovering new bodily shapes that are “yogic” and,
3) Learn to choreograph vinyasas through a deep understanding of transitions and overall movement patterning (called Kalayata in Sanskrit). We will create poses and link them for bring self-awareness, strength and poise.
This workshop serves the needs of personal yoga practice and sequencing for yoga teachers.
$40 p/session advance, $45 after June 22. For registration, please link here.
